5 Surprising Things That Make It Difficult to Tone Your Body

Posted by Dr. Kris Wusterhausen on May 11, 2021

When you’ve been working hard for weeks or even months, it can be incredibly frustrating when you don’t get the results you expect. This is the unfortunate reality for so many people who exercise and work out regularly. It can even feel like your body is working against you!

Getting toned comes with a lot of ups and downs, and nothing feels as discouraging as the feeling of not making any gains.

The first thing you need to know is you’re not alone. Whether you are an experienced athlete or someone who has only recently developed their first-ever workout routine, plateaus are a common occurrence. It’s important to know you’re not alone because you don’t have to give up just because you’ve hit this frustrating wall.

The second thing that you need to know is this: it may not be your fault! There are many reasons you may be having trouble getting your body as toned as you want it to be.

Let’s look at what may be causing these issues for you! Once you identify the problem, it becomes a lot easier to find a solution.

1. You may have an unrealistic picture of what is possible.

This isn’t meant to be discouraging! It’s important to know the phrase “getting toned” is often misused. Even though people often refer to muscles as “looking toned,” the reality is muscle tone is about what muscles can do — not what they look like. Fitness and diet concept. When you say you want your muscles to be toned, you might mean you want people to be able to see the visual shape of your muscles. You want a visible six-pack or thin thighs.

However, when trainers talk about muscle tone, they are describing the tension of your muscles at rest. This is not something that you can create; muscles simply have tone.

Your muscles already have shape and tone, both of which are covered up by your body fat. You may already have incredibly strong muscles. Focusing only on exercise isn’t going to reveal that strength when it is hidden underneath a layer of fat.

2. You may be following bad advice.

There are a LOT of voices out there offering their “expert opinions” on how to get toned. Not all of these opinions are valid. For example, some trainers will emphasize that exercise alone is all you need. “If you work out constantly, you WILL get the muscle tone you want. Right?”

The best way to achieve the shapely muscles you want is a two-fold process: build muscle mass and lose body fat. Another vital part of building muscle is working those muscle fibers, which you can do by challenging yourself.

3. You may have bought into the myth of spot training.

Strong young man flexing his biceps in the gymSpot training is the process of focusing on a specific muscle group and working weights with the intention of toning them. While it is true that you should work each of your muscle groups to build strength, doing so won’t eliminate the fat underneath that particular muscle.

To eliminate fat around a muscle group, it is important to do a combination of things:

  • Reduce calories. Taking in fewer calories than you burn off through exercise and daily movements is a guaranteed way to lose weight. Just don’t reduce your calories too drastically!
  • Lift weights. Strengthen your body by weight lifting, which pushes your muscles and increases your strength with every lift.
  • Do cardio. Cardio exercise is a great way to burn calories while improving your overall health.

When you lose body fat, this will include the body fat around muscles and make your body look more toned.

4. You may not be burning enough fat.

At the gymAre you focusing entirely on weight lifting and not on cardio? This is a pretty common mistake, especially when people feel frustrated by a lack of muscle tone. You may be tempted to keep focusing exclusively on weight lifting.

A related issue is you may have focused on weight loss but not fat loss.

Try not to get sidetracked into a weightlifting-only exercise routine. Burn fat through a good cardio routine to ensure that your existing muscle tone is more visible.

5. You may need extra help from a WarmSculpting service.

Stubborn fat that hides your toned muscles may not go away, despite your best efforts. When this happens, a tool like SculpSure WarmSculpting is often necessary to achieve real results.
