4 Proven Preventative Skin Care Habits To Start In Your 20s

When you’re young, one of the last things you think about is whether your skin is showing signs of aging. However, did you know you can develop wrinkles, age spots, fine lines, and scars at any age? Even more alarming, our skin starts to lose its ability to repair itself starting in our 20s.

Skin is bombarded by outside forces every day. Sun damage, harsh weather, rough cleansers, and even stress can contribute to aging skin. But you can fight back. The sooner you start an anti-aging skin care regimen, the better your odds of enjoying healthy, youthful skin into your 40s and beyond.

So which preventative routines should you follow? These four skin care habits not only make your skin look healthy today, but they also ensure healthier- and younger-looking skin as you age.

1. Don’t Underestimate The Power Of Diet And Exercise

Our personal habits, particularly diet and exercise, have very definite effects on our skin.  For example, did you know that omega-3 fatty acids in fish can help to keep skin cell membranes strong and flexible?  Or that antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables help combat the free-radicles that contribute to wrinkles, brown spots, and other signs of aging?

Don’t forget the benefits of drinking enough water! Hydrating skin is one of the most important habits we can pick up while we’re young, and dehydration can have negative effects on the texture of your skin.

Exercise also plays an important role in skin health.  In fact, exercise not only shows promise in its ability to help keep skin younger, but some research shows that it may have the power to reverse skin aging in people who start exercising late in life.

An active lifestyle and healthy diet are good for our bodies for many reasons: fewer health issues, stronger immune systems, and good mental clarity are just a few benefits we can enjoy by implementing positive changes in these activities. But let’s not underestimate the benefits they can have on our skin as well!

How to put it into action:

  • Eat a clean diet of fresh fruits, dark green vegetables, and fish.
  • Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated.
  • Exercise at least three times a week, if not more often, to preserve your skin’s production of collagen.

2. Facials Are More Than Indulgences

If you want healthy skin, you need to make sure you keep it hydrated — and find a way to lock that hydration in. Luckily, many facials on the market today do both (and more).

For example, a HydraFacial combines cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration. It’s a non-invasive and non-irritating procedure that has been proven to result in clearer, firmer, and plumper skin.

Benefits of a HydraFacial procedure can include:

  • Fewer lines and wrinkles
  • Clearer skin
  • Reduction of mild acne

Another facial that helps hydrate skin is the Vampire Facial. Through a process of extracting your body’s own PRP (platelet-rich-plasma), the Vampire Facial allows growth hormones found in the PRP to replenish your skin’s natural ability to rejuvenate and replace old, dull skin cells.  A Vampire Facial has been shown to:

  • Help diminish fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve skin tone and texture
  • Increase collagen and elastin production
  • Boost the skin’s ability to produce antioxidants
  • Enable the skin to remain better hydrated

How to put it into action:

  • Estheticians recommend you get a HydraFacial once a month for regular maintenance and wrinkle prevention.
  • For maintenance, you should shoot for one Vampire Facial every six months.

3. Make A Habit Of Exfoliating

Over time, dead skin cells can accumulate on your face and cause grey skin tone, dry skin, and acne. Exfoliation can help gently and safely remove these dead cells, allowing the skin to produce newer, healthier cells.

Ways to exfoliate include:

Exfoliating scrubs – in-home cleansers that gently lift away dead cells on the top surface of your skin.

Exfoliating facial sponges – sponges specially designed to remove dead surface cells from the face and body (example: loofah sponges).

Chemical Peels – procedures designed to exfoliate into deeper layers of the skin using varying types of acid solutions.

Alpha-hydroxy acid – superficial (top skin layer) exfoliation

Glycolic or trichloroacetic – medium (outer and middle skin layers) to deep (middle skin layer) exfoliation.

Peels can take anywhere from 7-21 days to completely heal but have been shown to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, mild discolorations, and shallow scars. They can also help regenerate smoother skin.

Non-ablative resurfacing – a procedure which uses lasers to deliver heat to deeper layers of skin helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, tighten skin, and stimulate collagen production.

How to put it into action:

  • Generally, you should schedule a chemical peel every four to six weeks for best results.

4. Botox: It’s Not Just For The Over 40 Crowd!

It might shock you to learn the average age of recipients who utilize preventative Botox treatment is 25 to 30. But what is “preventative Botox treatment”? This treatment involves regular Botox injections at a younger age to prevent fine lines and wrinkles before they develop.

Don’t wait for a wrinkle or crease to remain fixed on your skin before turning to Botox.  If you start treating those “usual” wrinkles and creases when you first notice them (crows feet that only show when you smile, laugh lines that only show when you laugh, etc.), you can help muscles to relax before the wrinkles and lines become permanent.

How to put it into action:

  • Botox typically lasts 3-4 months, so schedule your treatments accordingly. After a period of time, your facial muscles will begin to train themselves to contract less, and you can extend the time between treatments.
